Coiled Tubing Drilling

Pushing Far Past Previous Limits

With our hybrid rig fleet, Xtreme Drilling and Coil Services drills far deeper with coiled tubing than any other rigs in the world. In fact, our technology has increased the maximum depth possible with coiled tubing drilling by 150%—to approximately 10,000 feet—using 3 1/2" or 4" tubing.

The ability to reach this unprecedented depth makes coiled tubing drilling available to a much broader spectrum of operators, including those active in U.S. resource plays. These companies can now realize the many advantages that coiled tubing offers over jointed pipe in both safety and efficiency. For example, coil's constant circulation reduces the potential for getting stuck, requires no surging and swabbing of the wellbore, and reduces blowout potential.

High-powered Rigs with Extended Reach

Our rigs drill faster and deeper with coiled tubing partly because of their high-horsepower pumping capacity—up to 1,600 hp—and high-capacity injectors, with ratings up to 200,000 lbs. Additionally, our double-trailer transportation system enables Xtreme to use much greater lengths of coiled tubing than any other driller.

Other Advantages of Xtreme's Coiled Tubing Drilling:

  • Continuous coiled tubing with zero connections
  • Snubbing capability - coil can snub down as much as it can pull up
  • Trips three times faster on average - coil performs at 2,935 feet per hour vs. 984 feet per hour with jointed pipe
  • Almost no spillage with closed coiled tubing system

CT Drilling Performance in Hard Formation

In 2008, our XDR 200DTPLUS rig proved that our electric injectors and autodriller could drill hard formations with coiled tubing. We achieved this success in the Waddell Ranch field in West Texas. It was an unprecedented feat at the time, but one that we have since duplicated repeatedly. This chart illustrates how Xtreme's coiled tubing drilling is faster than jointed pipe, even in a harder carbonate.
